Welcome to Sound Projects

Sound, Noise, Silence, and Music - how do we define them? When we listen to these elements critically, how can we use them in our own work with an awareness of their social and political functions? This course will explore developments in sound art from the early-20th century to the present, to cultivate a critical ear for listening and creating. We will listen to work by artists who have blurred traditional boundaries of music, science, design, fine arts, and philosophy, and read critical writings in cultural studies, sound and media theory.

Modes of Listening (2)

Additional Listening Assignment.
You probably already know this but just to be sure - just hit the play button and you can hear pieces at full length. Unfortunately the widget is on shuffle mode and I believe there is nothing I can do about it. If someone knows, please let me know. Otherwise click on the forward button and it should take you to the piece you want to (re)listen to. Also on the playlist is the complete La Selva piece. Enjoy!

Drove Through Ghosts to Get Here by 65daysofstatic

Hi again,

I discovered 65daysofstatic just two days ago and absolutely loved it. Their genre is post-rock/electronic and the band uses guitar sounds dredged over rhythmic computer glitches.

You can listen one of their pieces, "Drove Through Ghosts to Get Here" from the album "One Time from All Time" on the link below. I always find it effective the use of minimalist piano and i appreciated in this videoclip the parallelism between image and sound.

Music and Its Others

Kenneth Goldsmith wrote several wonderful, witty and brief articles all summarized in Bring Da Noise: A Brief Survey of Sound Art. This is interesting reading for those who want to dig deeper into "Music and Its Others".

Kenneth Goldsmith has been doing a weekly show on WFMU, the New Jersey-based freeform radio station since 1995, where Goldsmith assumes the broadcast name of Kenny G. The show is an extension of Goldsmith's writing experiments, his pedagogy and UbuWeb. More information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Goldsmith

Aural Postcards: Sound, Memory and the City

Aural Postcards: Sound, Memory and the City by Fran Tonkins (The Auditory Culture Reader 2003: 303)
This text talks about modes of listening in the urban environment. In particular it refers to the aspect of memory and sound: "This realation fo sound to memory is audibly present at the moment of 'recall', the melding of space, sound and memory there in the concept of 'resonance'; a movement in the air like sound you can touch."

This short text might be of interest to some of you since we spend some time this week discussing the concept of memory, and the phenemenology of sound in regard to memory and space.

Noise and Politics-Jacques Attali

4th page of the reading 1, 2nd paragraph
"to listen,to memorize-this is the ability to interpret and control history"

If you want you can read one short story of Borges named Fiounes the Rememberer
that is very interesting about the concept of being able to memorize.
It is also very important to connect somehow the function of memorizing with the function of generalizing and see how these work.
I have the story but in greek. If anybody is interested we can search and find it in english. If not I can summarize it and we can talk about it.

This is a link to see some things about Borges:

Theatrical approach

Thinking about the theatrical approach to a music piece I would like to add also a link to a song of Sopor Aeternus.He/She is a very strange persona but I think this song is very interesting as its vocals have a personal and also theatrical aspect.

Indonesian Heritage

When Indonesia leaded by Ir Sukarno as the first president of Indonesia, he has slogan “Ganyang Malaysia (Smash Malaysia). It is caused by greed of Malaysia which always take Indonesian Heritage.

See Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation

Ssee also about some indonesian heritage which has campaigned by Malaysia
  1. Original indonesia folk song
  2. Rasa sayang in Netherland Film
  3. Rasa Sayang Malaysia Campaign

The actual issue between Indonesia and Malaysia is Angklung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angklung). Almost Malaysian people play angklung and several website campaign that angklung is one of the Malaysian Heritage (http://malaysiana.pnm.my/kesenian/Idio_Angklung.htm). To solve this problem, Indonesian people try to present to the world by concert from one country to another country. See angklung concert in hamburg

I interested in intrument music, all kind of instrument music. Angklung is one of Indonesian heritage. I think it is the social command for Indonesia young generation to tell to people in the world.

Mike Patton - Pranzo Oltranzista

Pranzo Oltranzista is Mike Patton's second solo project. It is subtitled "Musica da Tavola per Cinque (Banquet Piece for Five Players)," and is based on "Futurist Cookbook" by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, written in 1932. Following on from Adult Themes for Voice, it contains a number of tracks linked by a culinary theme and best listened to as a unitary movement. Featuring Marc Ribot on guitar, William Winant on percussion, Erik Friedlander on cello and John Zorn on alto sax, this is Patton's most technically sophisticated solo project.
